The following information may answer few of your questions about what CHAT is
and isn't
*We try to have at least 2 official "CHAT only" activities each
month. Sometimes more, depending on what our members organize.
*
Please note that for
CHAT activities held in a public place (ice skating, Civic
Theater, Jefferson Pointe, etc) non homeschool
friends are *usually* welcome. Check with the person who organized the
event or with the Calendar Coordinator – The Troll – as we still limit
who may attend as a 'friend' to people whom we know to fit in well with the
CHAT group.
*We list ballroom dance opportunities in the Calendar which have been organized
by other groups. This helps our CHAT ballroom dance class participants to keep
track of when and where they can go for practice.
The dances offer a chance for the over 300 CHAT teens who have been to the
classes to practice in a real dance situation. We have checked out all of the
dances listed for appropriateness. The ones we list are no smoking, no
drinking, and are truly a very nice group of people who really appreciate our
teens.
You do not have to participate in the ballroom dances to be a part of CHAT!
However, we have found that those who do participate in them form the deepest
friendships in CHAT and make up the core group of who attends CHAT activities.
Please know that the dances listed in the Calendar are NOT CHAT events (except
for the Christmas Dance, and the Spring Ball). Our CHAT Dance Chaperones
do try and keep things close to CHAT standards at these public dances, but
realize that the non-homeschoolers at these activities do not fall under CHAT
authority.
*The teens in general are quite welcoming to new folks, making an effort to
help new ones to be a part of the group. This is especially effective if the
new teen is also trying at all to join in.
When you bring your teen, a thing which we have observed is that if they come
alone or with 1 friend then our teens will still draw them in (especially if
the friend is homeschooled).
*Many moms bring their teen to a CHAT event when they are new to the group,
then stay to watch and offer security to their teen. This is really not a bad
idea, and parents are encouraged to stay and help chaperone at events.
* In the world we are considered to be a very conservative group; in the
homeschool community we are considered to be more moderate--not so
conservative.
We serve a large group of area homeschool teens with fun, safe, activities that
we feel are not displeasing to God.
A majority of the kids are NOT allowed to, or do not wish to, date. There is
much discussion and acceptance of friendship and courtship.
Occasionally a couple will form at CHAT (probably one or less each
year-usually among the older teens).
The only physical involvement that is allowed at CHAT
activities is an arm around a shoulder, or hand holding.
This is all that we will allow at CHAT events.
At all CHAT events, any touch between genders should be done in an innocent,
respectful manner (respectful of the person, but also everyone around who
may be watching!).
